UK ETA Required for Travelers Visiting the United Kingdom
Mandatory for visa-exempt travelers arriving by air, rail or sea
Visa-exempt nationals traveling to the United Kingdom must obtain an approved ETA before departure. British and Irish citizens are exempt. Complete the application online in minutes and receive an email confirmation linked to your passport.
What is the UK ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory entry clearance for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to the United Kingdom. It is electronically linked to your passport and checked by the carrier before boarding. Travelers without a valid ETA may be refused boarding.
The application is fully online and typically takes a few minutes. You will be asked for passport details, a facial photograph, contact information, and a short set of suitability questions (criminal history). Once reviewed, you receive a decision by email – most approvals arrive within minutes, and the Home Office advises allowing up to 3 working days.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
- Tourism – Leisure travel, sightseeing, or visiting friends and family
- Business – Short-term meetings, conferences, or client visits
- Short Study Programs – Academic courses or training programs under six months
- Transit – Passing through UK border control on the way to a final international destination
Every visa-exempt traveler – including infants and minors – needs their own ETA. You do not need an ETA if you are a British or Irish citizen, hold a valid UK visa, or already have permission to live, work or study in the UK.
Eligibility & Validity
UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) – Visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to the United Kingdom must obtain an approved ETA before departure. The ETA is digital, electronically linked to your passport, and required in addition to a valid passport from an eligible country.
Once approved, the ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first. It allows multiple visits to the UK of up to 6 months per stay. The approval is delivered by email and electronically linked to the passport used in the application; no printout is required at check-in.

VaticanWho Needs a UK ETA?
Since its full rollout in 2025, visa-exempt foreign nationals must obtain an approved ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom. This applies whether you are visiting for tourism, business, short-term study, or a connection through a UK airport where you pass border control. Every traveler, including minors and infants, needs their own ETA linked to the passport they will travel with.
You do not need an ETA if you already hold a valid UK visa or UK immigration status, or if you are a British or Irish citizen. U.S. citizens and U.S. Green Card holders traveling to the UK do require an ETA. After approval, your ETA is automatically linked to your passport – no printed copy is needed.
